The Fate: Limited Edition Letterpress Print

I made a limited edition run of my piece The Fate, on an off-white paper from the French Paper Co. As you can see, I'm still using my cellphone camera for pics, which is less than ideal. Prints are 12-1/2 x 19, and they're up for sale in my etsy shop.

When I lived in Vietnam, my favorite thing to do was to grab my camera and my friend Sam, hop on a motorbike, and explore. I took this photo in a dusty town about an hour outside of Hanoi. We were cavorting with a huge group of children, and this tiny, poised girl walked by with her cow. I love the expression on her face, and the size differential between her and the cow.

At first he seems gruff, surly, astringent, and he certainly is a strong flavor with his commanding air and gravely voice. But then you realize he's also a giggly little prankster, with a pair of rosy cheeks and twinkling eyes. He'll sneak up, bursting with a joke, and then walk away chortling.

Last night we went for a walk just after sunset, a handful of us and his dog too. He calls his dog Mama, and is so proud of her. Alright, mama. We talked about dream houses, as he draws dream houses all the time, little cabins out in the woods with porches for Mama and a little room off to the side for CV radio.

When I drew him, he acted as if it was the most natural thing in the world that someone would want to draw him, though I think he was flattered too. He sat regally, watching TV, and inspected my drawing carefully when I was done. His thoughts: "Not bad. Not bad at all." Here's Mama:

My goal is to use a combination of pencil, paper, and computer to make images that, ideally, end up looking polished while retaining the rough texture and organic feel of the hand-drawn. My friend Arini inspires me in a lot of ways, but the one I'm thinking of right now is her habit of celebrating one year anniversaries. Like her one year anniversary of eating meat--she celebrated, aptly, with a giant meaty meal. Arini is good people. I wonder what anniversaries and other things she's been celebrating these days.

I thought of Arini this past weekend because I celebrated my one year anniversary of being in Portland. Woot! I arrived here at the end of last May with a scanner, four pads of expensive drawing paper, a pair of boots, and couple changes of clothes. I'm pretty thoroughly satisfied with what I've found here in Maine since that day, and they ways that I've grown since I've been in this fine little town. I'm planning on sticking around.

So, woah, it's been a little while. This year I made resolutions, but I also started making a list of 100 things I hope to do in this life. Aimee and I sat down one day with mugs of coffee, scribbling out our wants and needs. Here is a *quiet* little piece about being out in the middle of the sea with no land in sight, one of the things on my list. Someday I will--again--make pieces of art that smack you in the face with their colors, that shake you awake with their noise, but for now here's a pocketful of calm:

These days, every time I have a spare couple of hours I find myself rolling around either on my bicycle or in my quirky and awesome new car--it's such a Walsh car, hunting for pictures. I took these photos on my trip up to Harpswell last weekend. I missed the turn off and ended up on the most beautiful island ever.

In 2007, I lived in Vietnam for eight months with my friend Sam. One of our favorite things about living there was riding our motorbike. It's such an exhilarating feeling to drive in a place with so many people and so few rules. You set off into the street, and then things come at you from every direction--motorbikes, vendors, bicycles, animals, pedestrians. There are vegetable stalls stretched across the road and barbers on the sidewalks and people bicycling past you with boiling water or sheets of glass and somehow you learn how to move forward through it all.

Sam and I became so fascinated by Hanoi's traffic culture that we ended up writing a little book about it. I'm just getting around to wrapping up the project, which is exciting! More news soon, but here is a sneak preview.

But once in a while the landscape cries out to be noticed and documented, and today was one of those days. On one of the islands near Portland, a library recently burned down. Local illustrators were asked to participate in a fundraiser for the library; we were sent charred pages from books that burned in the fire, and were asked to illustrate the pages, which will be auctioned off to raise money.

growing up in the U.P.

In a class, we were supposed to illustrate the phrase "After School." This illustration depicts the place I most often hung out after school while I was growing up in the Upper Peninsula, Michigan. We lived in a small college town and loved to collect bottles, turning them in to the local grocery store for 10 cents a piece, spending our earnings on baseball cards and sweets and then heading out to one of the big rocks around town to build forts and become sticky with soda and candy. One time the grocery store had elephant rides in the parking lot, or at least all my siblings and I remember this.
